“Josie can lead us in a cheer?” Josie’s outraged tone ended in a chuckle. “I couldn’t believe you said that...and I can’t believe she made me do it.”

“Go Broncs.” Noah grinned. “Your mother enjoyed the evening.”

That, Josie realized, was the point. She kept her voice easy, not wanting him to see just how much his kindness to her mother touched her. “You looked through those piles of scrapbooks because of her.”

Noah pulled the Land Rover into his driveway and the garage door slid up.

“I agreed because I wanted to see a picture of you in your cheerleading outfit.” He gave an exaggerated leer. “Or, even better, a bikini.”

Josie’s lips twitched. She could have insisted he take her home so she could research atrial fibrillation and the current strategies for treating it. She also needed to make a list of everything needing to be done to get the Valentine’s party rolling.

A party that at least, thanks to Noah’s generosity, had a venue. That he’d offered his home so readily was only one of the many things this evening that had confused her.

No, she wouldn’t insist on going home. Not yet.

“Why did you tell my father we could have the party here?” she asked as the garage door slid closed, blocking out the snow and crisp night air.

He turned slightly in his seat to face her. “I thought that was obvious.”

“Not to me.”

“It assures me I’ll be spending Valentine’s Day with you.”

“Are you flirting with me, Dr. Anson?”

“Perhaps I am.” He smiled and her heart turned soft and warm.

Pondering the strangeness of the situation, Josie followed Noah into the house, unable to keep from noticing his stellar ass. Recalling how he’d acted only moments earlier, she gave an exaggerated leer at his backside, then had to stifle a giggle.

Noah abruptly turned and she offered him an innocent smile.

A suspicious gleam filled his eyes but he merely held out his hand for her coat.

Josie placed her jacket into the outstretched hand and trudged to the family room. An overstuffed sofa beckoned and she sank into its welcoming softness.

Noah got a fire going in the hearth then hesitated at the edge of the sofa. “May I get you something to drink?”

“A cup of hot tea would be nice.”

He smiled. “Coming right up.”

While he was gone she picked up a magazine on the side table. It was a glossy spread of homes and condos in the Chicago area. A Realtor’s card was clipped to the front with a website highlighted.

She flipped through the pages. The real estate prices seemed comparable to those in Jackson Hole.

He soon returned with the tea. The smile on his face dimmed when he saw what was in her lap.

She inclined her head. “Planning to relocate?”

Josie expected him to laugh and deny. Instead he removed the magazine from her lap. After placing it back on the side table, he handed her the tea then took a seat beside her on the sofa.

“There’s no reason for me to stay in Jackson Hole if this last push to reunite with Daffodil doesn’t work.
